It traces the development of animal research from antiquity to contemporary biomedical science, highlighting the entrenchment of animal use within scientific, regulatory, and socio-political structures. While the emergence of frameworks such as the 3Rs and new approach methodologies (NAMs) represents progress, they often fall short of challenging the fundamental ethical and epistemological status quo. The chapter explores how animals are increasingly engineered and instrumentalized for commercial, medical, and scientific purposes{\textemdash}from xenotransplantation to gene editing{\textemdash}raising profound ethical questions that exceed traditional welfare concerns. By contextualizing the limitations of incrementalist reform within broader political, cultural, and epistemic paradigms, the chapter argues for a radical rethinking of the role of animals in science. It calls for a shift from technocratic solutions toward a political critique capable of confronting speciesism and envisioning a genuine exit from the animal experimentation paradigm.}, year = {2027}, journal = {Moving Toward Nonanimal Approaches in Medical Research and Testing}, pages = {3-17}, month = {2027-01-01}, publisher = {Academic Press}, isbn = {978-0-443-26514-3}, url = {https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/B978044326514300014X}, }
